Adobe confirms layoffs |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
There's more bad news circulating today in the tech industry. A few days after Microsoft, RealNetworks and Classmates Online cut staff, word now comes that Adobe plans to eliminate 680 full-time positions worldwide.
Adobe is based in San Jose, Calif., but it has maintained a large presence in the Seattle area for a number of years. It is unclear whether the latest round of cuts had any impact on the Seattle operations, which in the past has employ about 500 people. We have an email into corporate PR at Adobe, and we'll update this post if we get more details.
Adobe laid off 600 workers last December, and at the time it wouldn't break out the layoff numbers geographically.
The most recent cuts were disclosed in a SEC filing today, with the nine percent reduction first reported by TechCrunch.
Adobe, the maker of Photoshop, Illustrator and other graphic design software, said the company will record between $65 million and $71 million in restructuring charges. Those charges include $17 million to $19 million in consolidation of leased facilities and $48 million to $52 million in employee severance arrangements.
And it appears there may be more restructuring to come as Adobe digests Omniture, a Web analytics firm that it purchased for $1.8 billion on Oct. 23
"Adobe expects to incur additional restructuring expenses relating to Omniture’s operations," the company said in its filing today. Last month, Adobe said it planned to cut nine percent of Omniture's workforce. Those cuts are not included in today's numbers.
