Clearwire plans to turn on its new high-speed wireless network in the Seattle area beginning tomorrow, the 27th market where the company offers WiMax service. The announcement is significant given that Clearwire is based in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland.
For months now, Clearwire has served the Seattle area with a pre-WiMax technology that didn't have the speed or capacity of the WiMax network. With the new network in place, the company said that customers will be able to experience mobile download speeds of three to six Mbps with bursts up to 10 Mbps. The new service is being marketed under the Clear moniker, a brand that you're likely to start seeing more of in the coming weeks.
Comcast -- one of the largest providers of high-speed Internet service in Seattle and a major investor in Clearwire -- offers high-speed Internet connections that start at 12 Mbps. (Comcast's Extreme package can reach up to 50 Mbps).
Of course, there's one huge difference between Comcast and Clearwire.
Clearwire's WiMax network essentially creates a 1,300 square mile broadband "cloud" over the Seattle area, meaning that customers can log on to the Internet whether they are at home, the neighborhood coffee shop or traveling down Interstate 5.
Clearwire's mobile service plans start at $35 per month, with day passes available for $10. Mobile customers who don't have a WiMax-equipped laptop also must purchase ($49.99) or lease ($4.99 per month) a USB modem from Motorola.
Clearwire continues to lose massive amounts of money, as we reported earlier this month. But it also has raised boatloads of capital in recent weeks-- including a $920 million debt round announced last week and a $1.5 billion equity round in early November. The money will be used to continue to build out the network.
In addition to the new network, Clearwire plans to announce that Brian Carter has been named general manager for the Puget Sound region. Here's a look at the coverage areas for the Puget Sound region.
UPDATE: Sprint Nextel -- the largest investor in Clearwire -- also is announcing its 4G mobile broadband service in Seattle. Comcast too is unveiling its mobile High-Speed 2go service today. The Sprint Nextel and Comcast services piggyback on the Clearwire network.
