It is a little bit of a good news, bad news type of story for those looking for work in the high-tech industry. The National Venture Capital Association today released figures showing that venture-backed startups throughout the country now have nearly 11,000 jobs available. Washington state -- which has one of the stronger startup clusters in the country -- ranked fifth with 399 available jobs.
That's the good news from the NVCA press release. But here's the bad news -- and you won't see it in the release. Over the course of the past two weeks, TechFlash has tracked more than 300 local jobs lost at some of the region's tech stalwarts. (Related story: "Ongoing Seattle tech job cuts come despite signs of turnaround.")
And while the carnage in the startup sector from late last year appears to have slowed, it is not like the job creation engine is firing up.
According to a survey of Seattle area venture capitalists conducted last month by the WTIA, 80 percent of respondents said that staffing levels would stay the same at their portfolio companies during the fourth quarter. A lot of people are talking about this as the "jobless recovery," and there's evidence that it may be occurring in the technology sector as well.
Tracking jobs in the startup sector is a little bit like herding cats. The NVCA compiled its numbers by compiling jobs from its StartupHire job board.
We will get more details on where the overall job market is headed later this morning after the state Employment Security department releases unemployment numbers for the month of October.
