Data on Cyber Monday is starting to trickle in, and it's looking good for Amazon. The ecommerce giant continued its reign as the top visited site on Cyber Monday and saw a 44 percent increase in visits from the same day a year ago, according to the Experian Hitwise research firm.
But things didn't look as rosy for the rest of the industry. Among the top 500 retail sites, overall U.S. online visits were down 9 percent on Cyber Monday, according to Hitwise. The web traffic data doesn't indicate actual sales, but provides some evidence that the a few big brands like Amazon are standing out in the ecommerce landscape.
Among the top 500 retail sites, Amazon received 15.53 percent of U.S. visits on Cyber Monday, up from 10.79 percent a year ago. Wal-Mart was in second place with 9.54 percent, followed by Target (5.16 percent), Best Buy (3.56 percent), and JC Penney (2.58 percent).
Wal-Mart, which has been engaged in price war with Amazon over books, DVDs and other products, saw its visits increase 11 percent on Cyber Monday.
Amazon has been the top visited site on Cyber Monday going back to 2006, according to Hitwise. As we reported earlier, the Wal-Mart site was No. 1 on Thanksgiving day, but Amazon narrowed the gap. Amazon was also tops on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.
It appears that Cyber Monday was also kind to some third-party retailers who sell on Amazon. Seattle-based Mercent Corp., a company that helps big brands sell and market products online, said client sales via Amazon's marketplace increased 47 percent on Cyber Monday from the same day a year ago.
