Early in the year, Microsoft said it was holding on to its cash and waiting for acquisitions in the midst of the economic downturn, until smaller companies came to grips with the fact that they were no longer worth as much as they thought. Whether or not this is a sign of that realization taking hold, the Redmond company is clearly back in a buying mood, this morning announcing its second deal in as many days.
Today's acquisition is Toronto-based Opalis Software, which makes data-center automation technologies used by customers including Dow Chemical, Xerox and Kawasaki. The acquisition was first reported last night by TheDeal.com. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
Brad Anderson, a Microsoft corporate vice president, writes in a blog post that the Opalis technology "is a pivotal piece" of what the company describes as its "dynamic data center initiative." He explains:
This deal brings together the deep datacenter automation expertise of Opalis with the integrated physical and virtualized datacenter management capabilities of Microsoft System Center. I believe Opalis’ software together with the System Center suite will improve the efficiency of IT staff and operations, and customers will gain greater process consistency. Opalis’ software captures the IT processes, in a documented and repeatable way, which can be run over and over again. These capabilities will be added to Microsoft System Center to help customers automate complex IT processes, increase cost savings and shorten timeframes for IT service delivery across physical, virtual and cloud computing environments.
Microsoft yesterday announced plans to acquire Sentillion, a health-care technology company based in Andover, Mass. The size of the companies fits Microsoft's pattern of focusing primarily on small- to medium-sized acquisitions, and only occasionally trying to pull off big ones.
