It might not feel as immediately satisfying as throwing your iPhone out the window, but here's something you can do instead the next time AT&T's network drops one of your calls. The wireless provider today launched a new iPhone app that lets users quickly submit information about network problems they encounter.
AT&T says it will use information collected from the free 'Mark the Spot' app to supplement its own data as it decides where to invest in network improvements. The company says the app was used previously by its employees, before being opened to the general public today.
In August, a J.D. Power & Associates report said AT&T and Sprint Nextel had the worst network performance among wireless providers in the Western U.S. when it came to phone calls. More recently, information from Bellevue-based network performance monitoring company Root Wireless suggested that Verizon's claim that its 3G data networks is vastly better than AT&T "may be overblown," as reported by TelephonyOnline.
AT&T said in November that it had upgraded its 3G network in parts of King and Pierce counties. The company says it is investing billions of dollars in its wireless network this year across the country.
The company's new iPhone app deals with both voice and data issues -- letting users select from a variety of preset options to report problems including dropped and failed calls and data failures. Users can also move a slider to identify the frequency of the problem, and add optional notes. With user permission, the app automatically reports the location where the problem took place.
