You may soon be flying across the friendly skies -- powered by camelina. Seattle-based AltAir Fuels today said that it has entered into a purchase agreement with 14 major airlines to develop up to 750 million gallons of camelina-based fuel at Sea-Tac Airport.
The fuel will be produced at a new facility in Anacortes, with AltAir Fuels saying that it could replace about 10 percent of the petroleum fuel consumed at the airport. The camelina oil will be converted into diesel and jet fuel with the possibility of hundreds of new jobs being created as a result.
The facility -- with a capacity of 100 million gallons and located at the Tesoro refinery in Anacortes -- is expected to come online in 2012.
A member of the mustard family and a relative of rapeseed, camelina has been used in the past as a vegetable oil and animal feed. It is primarily grown in Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon and Montana.
Gov. Chris Gregoire applauded the news.
“This is a great example of collaboration among leading Washington state companies to address some of the most pressing issues of our time -- climate change and economic development,” said Gregoire. “Through the leadership of Boeing our state has become known for building world class, innovative airplanes. We will soon become known for producing innovative, low carbon fuels to power them, creating much needed jobs and economic impact along the way.”
Particapting airlines include American Airlines, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Atlas Air, Delta Air Lines, FedEx Express, Hawaiian Airlines, Jet Blue Airways, Lufthansa German Airlines, Mexicana Airlines, Polar Air Cargo, United Airlines, UPS Airlines and US Airways.
AltAir is led by Tom Todaro, who co-founded agricultural sciences company Targeted Growth.
“Our camelina-based fuels will reduce emissions, provide American farmers additional revenue sources, while creating hundreds of new jobs and reducing our dependency on imported oil," said Todaro. "We look forward to replicating this model in other parts of the country and the world in the coming years.”
