Drugstore.com is extending the reach of its ecommerce business. The Bellevue company today announced a partnership deal with Milan, Italy-based eyewear firm Luxottica, which runs the LensCrafters and Pearle Vision optical store chains in the U.S. Drugstore will develop "branded, contact lens ecommerce sites" for Luxottica in North America and handle fulfillment and customer service for the sites.
Drugstore.com spokeswoman Anne Marshall likened the Luxottica deal to one that drugstore has with pharmacy benefits manager Medco Health Solutions. Drugstore handles online orders for Medco for over-the-counter (non-prescription) product orders.
The contact lens angle with the Luxottica deal is interesting. Drugstore.com, which sells everything from toothpaste to razor blades to diapers, has been increasing its use of specialty websites around specific product categories. The company has its own visiondirect.com and lensquest.com sites for contact lenses, beauty.com for makeup, and sexualwellbeing.com for, well, use your imagination.
Marshall said the company is planning to roll out another specialty site in early 2010.
