RealNetworks once again ranked near the bottom of Glassdoor.com's survey of the best places to work in the Seattle area, with founding CEO Rob Glaser scoring a dismal 12 percent employee approval rating.
The Seattle online music and gaming company -- which Glaser founded in 1995 -- tied with Getty Images near the bottom of the list with an overall score of 2.5. Only Paccar -- the Bellevue truck maker -- fared worse.
Glassdoor based its rankings -- with a top score of 5 -- on feedback from employees who work at the companies. Ironically, the top score in the Seattle area once again went to Zillow.com -- with a rating of 4.5 -- and its CEO Rich Barton -- who scored a 93 percent approval rating.
Barton -- as we've noted before -- is a co-founder, board member and early investor in Glassdoor.
Rich Barton
That would have been enough for Barton and Zillow to rank near the top of Glassdoor's list of the top 50 companies to work for in the U.S., but the company was noticeably absent from that list. (Only companies which had more than 25 reviews were considered for the national list, while the Seattle list was created for companies which had more than 10 reviews).
According to Glassdoor, the best company to work for in the country was Southwest Airlines which scored 4.7 percent with CEO Gary Kelly achieving a 94 percent approval rating. That was followed by General Mills, which scored 4.5 and whose CEO, Ken Powell, received a 97 percent approval rating.
A Seattle company came in third place in the national rankings. Slalom Consulting -- a business and technology consulting firm that has worked with companies such as Boeing and Microsoft -- scored 4.3. Its CEO, Tony Rojas, received an 81 percent approval rating.
The only high-tech CEO from the Seattle area who came close to Rojas' approval rating was Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, who recorded an approval rating of 75 percent. (Amazon.com got a 3.3 score from employees).
Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recorded an approval rating of just 29 percent. (See chart below for results from other Seattle area companies).
Glassdoor compiles its results based on the cumulative average rating from employees who participate in a 20-question survey. The survey addresses workplace issues such as career opportunities, communication, compensation and benefits, employee morale, recognition and feedback, as well as fairness and respect.
Here's a look at the top CEOs and companies.
And here's a look at some of those who didn't fare so well.
