Rupert Murdoch has done a lot of public grumbling about Amazon.com's terms for selling newspaper content through its Kindle. Now his media empire is embracing one of Amazon's key rivals, Sony, and its new electronic reader. In a deal announced today, News Corp. will sell digital subscriptions to the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and other media on Sony's new Daily Edition reader.
How exclusive is this deal? Kindle already sells Wall Street Journal subscriptions for the same price as Sony ($14.99 a month). News Corp. is throwing in some extras for Sony — a Journal daily news summary, the New York Post, and MarketWatch.com — though it's not clear if these will make the Sony reader stand out from the pack.
What does seem to be going on is Murdoch got a better revenue split. Last month, the News Corp. chairman and CEO revealed that his company now gets $6.50 for every $15 Wall Street Journal subscription on Kindle, and said it's still not a great deal. At today's Sony news conference in New York, WSJ managing editor Robert Thomson was coy on the exact terms with Sony but implied they were "better" than what the newspaper has with Kindle.
Thomson also said "our concerns about customer information have been addressed," an apparent reference to Amazon's refusal to share data on Kindle newspaper subscribers. The $399 Sony Daily Edition, which has had some holiday supply issues, is the latest in Sony's lineup of e-readers.
