Amazon Kindle DX out of stock

Amazon.com yesterday trumpeted that December is already its best sales month ever for its Kindle electronic readers, and tried to further juice sales with a free shipping offer on its $259 basic Kindle. But the company has also quietly run out of its other reader, the large-screen Kindle DX. The DX product page now gives a 4 to 6 week wait for shipping.

Looks like Amazon is succumbing to some of the same holiday supply issues that have dogged its e-reader rivals, including Barnes & Noble, Sony and Irex.

The DX sellout comes at a time when Amazon is pushing Kindle hard as a gift item. A few weeks ago, when Barnes & Noble's Nook reader sold out, Amazon bragged that "Kindle manufacturing is humming," though perhaps tellingly, the company only made mention of its $259 Kindle as "in stock and available for immediate shipment today."

The $489 Kindle DX is pretty pricey compared to many of the other readers on the market today. Amazon is targeting the large screen reader at students and newspaper readers.

It should be noted that despite Amazon's talk of record Kindle sales, the company has not given actual sales numbers, either units sold or revenue, for its readers.
