President Obama this morning named a new U.S. cybersecurity coordinator: Howard Schmidt, a longtime computer security specialist who has worked as an executive for companies including Microsoft and eBay, and as a security adviser to the administration of George W. Bush.
Given the significance of computer networks in the U.S. infrastructure, national security issues will be a major focus for Schmidt in the job.
"Howard is one of the world’s leading authorities on computer security, with some 40 years of experience in government, business and law enforcement," said John Brennan, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, in a statement announcing the appointment this morning. "Howard will have regular access to the President and serve as a key member of his National Security Staff. He will also work closely with his economic team to ensure that our cybersecurity efforts keep the Nation secure and prosperous."
Here's a White House video of Schmidt discussing his role.
