The end of the year has brought a reshuffling of executives within Microsoft's Dynamics business software group. The company confirmed this week that it has promoted Microsoft veteran Hal Howard from general manager to corporate vice president, responsible for research-and-development across the Dynamics ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) product line, which includes Dynamics AX, NAV, GP and SL.
Microsoft also confirmed the departure of Dean Lester, another company veteran and Dynamics general manager, who had previously been general manager for Windows graphics and gaming technologies. The company didn't disclose Lester's reasons for leaving but said, in response to our inquiry, that they were not related to changes in the Dynamics organization. We left a message for Lester at a publicly listed home number but haven't heard back.
ERP software in general helps companies track and manage finances, human resources, supply chains and other aspects of their business. Microsoft's Dynamics business has suffered amid the financial turmoil of the past year, with the company reporting a 7 percent decrease in Dynamics billings for FY09, ended June 30, compared with a 21 percent increase the year before.

Lester, who had been with the company since 1996, was no longer working there as of yesterday. We're still hoping to hear back from him on what he plans to do next. He's a native of the U.K., but given his experience in video games -- including past work for companies including Disney and Sega -- he might find plenty of opportunities in the Seattle region if he wants to return to the video-game business.
Howard has worked at the company since 1994, in areas including Exchange Server and Microsoft Passport. He has been in the Microsoft Business Solutions Group since 2003. According to a company statement, he has grown his Microsoft Dynamics ERP group to more than 1,000 employees worldwide over the past four years. His promotion to vice president was effective Dec. 15.
Kirill Tatarinov, the corporate vice president in charge of the broader Microsoft Business Solutions division, announced Howard's promotion on a site for Microsoft's Dynamics customers and partners this week.
