Nexus One details emerge: Will this be good or bad for Google? |

A post on the T-Mobile intranet confirms plans for a new Google Android device from handset maker HTC that "will be sold exclusively by Google via the Web," according to the unofficial TmoNews blog, which has a screenshot of the internal post.
T-Mobile will provide the wireless service and billing, but the fact that sales will be handled exclusively by Google indicates that this is the Nexus One, the new Google device widely seen as a potential challenge to the traditional model of wireless providers selling and subsidizing mobile phones.
On a related note, this morning's "Heard on the Street" in the Wall Street Journal looks at the decline of Microsoft's Windows Mobile and the rise of Google Android and the iPhone. The piece alludes to the Nexus One, noting, "Google could yet undermine Android's popularity with phone makers if it goes ahead with its own device. Microsoft's relationships with numerous device makers could help it fight back."
TmoNews cites sources who say the Nexus One will launch Jan. 5. And Google has just invited reporters to an Android "press gathering" that day in Mountain View, according to an Engadget post. As the site points out, that's a few days before the big Consumer Electronics Show, and it's notable that Google is choosing to hold a press event on its own, taking a page from the Apple playbook.
For the record, T-Mobile declined to comment in response to our inquiry, saying it doesn't comment about "rumors or speculation."
