About ten years ago, I fell in love with a German board game called "Settlers of Catan." A group of friends and I would gather on weekends to trade brick, iron, sheep, wood and wheat in order to declare the "Lord of All Catan." Unfortunately, my game-playing buddies moved away and we stopped playing.
But my interest was renewed in the dice game last month when The Wall Street Journal's Pui-Wing Tam wrote about how "Settlers of Catan" was gaining favor among technology executives in Seattle and Silicon Valley. The story quoted Redfin's Glenn Kelman -- an experienced player -- and Wetpaint's Ben Elowitz -- a newbie who was looking to learn the ropes.
Interestingly, the same day that story appeared in the Journal, I interviewed Marketfish founder Dave Scott -- who also happens to be a competitive board game player. Scott told me that his favorite game is Settler.
A week later -- at a technology event in Seattle -- the entrepreneurs in attendance quickly turned to strategies in the game of discovery, settlement and trade. It seemed to me that the stars -- or should we say the "longest road" segments -- were aligning.
I got to thinking, why not host a Settler game night in Seattle?
So, that's what we are going to do.
Here's the scoop. We'll host the tournament at the Spitfire in Belltown on January 19, with game play starting at 5 p.m.
My hope is to get four tables of four players, though we could expand the field if there's more interest.
The game will be open to both new and experienced players. Since space is limited, we are going to try to keep the field to startup executives, founders and employees. (After all, I'd like to understand how Settler translates to the entrepreneurial experience.)
If interested in playing, shoot me an email at johncook@bizjournals.com and I'll reserve you one of the slots.
