Tom Douglas
Seattle chef Tom Douglas is already a well-known figure at Amazon.com. He recently teamed up with the online retail giant on a line of private-label kitchen products. Now comes word that Douglas is looking at opening a restaurant in the heart of Amazon's new headquarters campus in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood. Douglas said he's in talks with Paul Allen's Vulcan Inc., which is developing the campus project, about a still-unnamed restaurant in the Terry Avenue Building, which will sit between two Amazon office towers.
"We definitely would like to do something down there," Douglas said. Asked whether he's signed a lease, he said he's "not ready to talk about it yet."
The new Amazon campus will eventually include 11 buildings totaling 1.7 million square feet of office space and 100,000 square feet of street-level retail in the South Lake Union area. Vulcan has been tight-lipped about its efforts to fill the retail space. The first batch of Amazon employees are due to start moving into the complex next year, with all buildings occupied by 2012 (the company's current headquarters is the PacMed building on Beacon Hill).
The Terry Avenue Building that Douglas is looking at is part of "Phase 4" of the Amazon campus. Phase 4 includes two new 12-story office towers and a "historic rehab" of the Terry Avenue Building, a two-story brick warehouse on Terry Avenue between Harrison and Thomas Streets. The "Phase 4" buildings are expected to be ready for occupancy by May 2011, according to Vulcan's timeline.
Asked about talks with Tom Douglas, Lori Mason Curran, a real estate spokeswoman for Vulcan, said "We talk with a lot of tenants. We would be delighted to welcome any number of well-known restauranteurs to South Lake Union." As for Douglas, she said, "we're not ready to discuss anything yet about whether we're working on a deal with him."
Douglas said he's spending most of his energy these days on a new restaurant next to Etta's near Pike Place Market, and said a South Lake Union location is further down the road. Asked if the future presence of thousands of Amazon employees is part of the attraction of South Lake Union, he said, "Without a doubt," but added that it's also "one of Seattle's beautiful growing neighborhoods."
