Amazon.com has been steadily expanding its trade-in program, letting people swap used goods of various kinds — video games, DVDs and academic textbooks — for Amazon gift card credit. Now the online retailer is making plans around consumer electronics trade-ins, according to a new job posting from the company. The move highlights Amazon's ongoing efforts to attract frugal shoppers in the tough economy.
The Amazon job posting seeks a software engineer for its trade-in platform, saying:
The pre-owned, after-market business has become huge and is rapidly expanding, perhaps nowhere more so than in Consumer Electronics. Technical innovation is rapid, producing more and more gadgets. As people upgrade to the latest and greatest their is a plethora valuable, perfectly good products that need a new home. We help facilitate the pairing of new owner with device, while also creating an open marketplace.
Amazon currently directs people who want to trade in electronics to websites Gazelle and FlipSwap, which let people swap gadgets in exchange for Amazon gift card credit. Gazelle accepts an array of digital cameras, laptops, game consoles and other devices, while FlipSwap accepts cell phones and iPods.
But from the looks of things, Amazon may be preparing to launch its own electronics trade-in program.
