Bing as iPhone default: Is Apple really this ticked off at Google? |

Microsoft and Apple are talking about making the Redmond company's Bing search engine the default on iPhones, according to a BusinessWeek story citing two people familiar with the matter. If it's true, and if it happens, it would be a big demonstration of the frosty relationship between Apple and Google.
Currently, Bing isn't even among the available search providers in the built-in search box in Safari on the iPhone. To use Bing, iPhone users need to browse to the site manually or use the Bing iPhone app.
Apple and Google have increasingly been at odds over the past year, particularly as the search giant has pushed forward with its Android mobile operating system, competing against the iPhone. That was made most clear when Google CEO Eric Schmidt resigned from the Apple board in August.
“Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in the statement announcing Schmidt's resignation.
Given the storied rivalry between Microsoft and Apple, most people wouldn't have expected a deal to make Bing the iPhone default. But the companies have shown themselves to be pragmatic in the past, particularly when business is at stake. Microsoft's Bing iPhone app was the latest example, given that the iPhone competes with devices running Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system.
Then again, it will be interesting to see if this Bing-iPhone thing actually happens. If Apple is looking to send a message to Google, it's possible it has already been sent sufficiently by BusinessWeek's two people familiar with the matter.
