Singh
Concur Technologies Chief Executive Steve Singh has built one of the most valuable technology companies in the Pacific Northwest, and he did so without the help of Seattle venture capitalists. But the 48-year-old entrepreneur -- who founded Concur in 1993 and raised cash from Valley firms such as Redpoint, Mayfield and Institutional Venture Partners -- is giving back to the Seattle venture capital community in another way.
Singh is the latest addition to Voyager Capital's advisory board, giving the Seattle venture capital firm some deep expertise in the software-as-a-service category.
"With its emphasis on building technology companies and strength in the Seattle region, Voyager is a natural fit for me," said Singh in a statement. "I look forward to being a resource for the firm's entrepreneurs."
Bill McAleer, a founding partner at Voyager, said he got to know Singh after Concur purchased portfolio company Capture Software. The two later served together on the board of the WTIA.
"We were looking to add another CEO to our advisory board with deep SAS (software as a service) background, as well as experience in building a successful company, and preferably someone in Seattle," said McAleer. "Steve fit this very well as he led Concur from a startup in an apartment to over a $2 billion market cap company."
Voyager's advisory board -- which helps the venture firm identify trends in key technology sectors-- includes experienced entrepreneurs such as Visio founder Jeremy Jaech and former Sierra Online, Loudeye and Primus Knowledge executive Mike Brochu.
And the venture firm has another connection to Concur. Former Concur executive Sterling Wilson serves as CEO of Ground Truth, a Voyager-backed mobile measurement startup that emerged from stealth mode earlier this week.
John Cook is co-founder and executive editor of TechFlash. He has been covering the technology beat for nearly a decade, writing about startups, entrepreneurs and venture capital, most recently serving as a reporter/blogger at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
