Let's say you're a technical whiz with a great startup idea, but you don't have the business chops to get the concept off the ground. Well, a new Seattle event -- already a hit in Silicon Valley -- could be the perfect place to find that special someone.
It's called FounderDating, and the matchmaking event will be coming to a yet-to-be-determined location in Seattle on February 9. Like the name suggests, the goal is to try connect founders -- not based on love -- but on complementary business and technical skills.
Let's face it, creating a startup with someone is kind of like entering a marriage or long-term relationship. So, why not bring the principles of dating to the startup world?
Brian Schultz, who previously co-founded Seattle mobile software company Ontela, is helping to organize the event with assistance from creators Saar Gar and Jessica Alter. Schultz said it can be extremely difficult to find the right partner, something he thinks is actually tougher in Seattle than the Bay Area.
"It usually requires meeting lots of people on 'first dates' before dating a few more seriously and finally choosing 'the one,'" Schultz tells TechFlash. "Although all of the various online and in-person networking tools/events help, they don't really solve the problem. Just like like dating romantically, you know that you have to date, but you still need to be choosy."
In online forums, Schultz said that people tend to exaggerate their skills or true qualities often don't come through. At other networking events, he added that consultants or service providers may be looming rather than true entrepreneurial types.
"This is discouraging for even the most dedicated," he said.
The idea with FounderDating is to bring together pre-screened candidates who can chat and discover each other's attributes in a comfortable setting. In the Bay Area, the FounderDating events have been drawing about 200 applicants. About 50 entrepreneurs are selected to attend.
Schultz is hoping to get 25 Seattle entrepreneurs out to the first event. And if it is successful, he's hoping to host the event quarterly. There's also the possibility to have some of the founders interact with their Bay Area counterparts through the FounderDating Web site, an intriguing proposition in that it could connect the best and brightest from the two tech communities.
At this point, Schultz is still working on the format for February 9. One possibility is to incorporate speed dating where entrepreneurs interact with one another for a short period of time. Another idea is to have tables set up where individuals can showcase their various skills. They are also considering color-coded name tags so that people interested in mobile, consumer Internet or enterprise software can easily find one another.
But Schultz also said they will be looking closely at applicants, and if two people have complementary skills and interests then he will simply make an introduction.
If that happens, Schultz could become Seattle's new "Millionaire Matchmaker."
