Here's an interesting development in the electronic book market. Publisher HarperCollins is reportedly in talks with Apple about making its titles available digitally for the new Apple tablet computer. The Wall Street Journal, which like HarperCollins is owned by News Corp., reports that HarperCollins is expected to set the price of its own e-books under the arrangement.
That would be a shot across the bow to Amazon.com, which has scrapped with publishers over its $9.99 or lower pricing of e-books for its Kindle readers. HarperCollins and some other publishing houses have recently made a policy of holding back the digital editions of popular new titles to preserve hardcover sales. That's prompted some blowback from Kindle enthusiasts, who recently flooded "Game Change," a hot-selling new book from HarperCollins, with negative customer reviews because its delayed Kindle edition.
According to the Journal, the HarperCollins titles for the Apple tablet would be enhanced with special features, and be released at the same time as hardcover, with Apple getting an unspecified cut of sales. The newspaper said details of the deal are still being worked out. Apple has invited media to a Jan. 27 event to unveil its "latest creation," widely expected to be the much-rumored tablet.
College textbook publishers are also making plans for the Apple tablet ahead of its official release.
