Study: Kindle falls short as newspaper delivery device
Amazon has a ways to go to get people reading newspapers on the Kindle, according to a new academic study. Researchers at the University of Georgia gave Kindle DXs to a group of people in Athens, Ga., and asked them to read the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on it (the AJC recently dropped Athens from its circulation area). But young and old alike found the e-reader less than ideal for consuming news, the study found.
The university writes:
While adults of all ages were impressed by the readability of the Kindle screen, describing it as “easy on the eyes,” few considered it a primary way to read news.
For younger adults, the Kindle fell short when compared to their beloved smart phones, with touch screens and multiple applications—from music to surfing the Internet—available in a single small package. The e-reader felt “old” to them.
Older adults were overall more receptive to the concept of an e-reader. However, the Kindle failed to include aspects of the traditional newspaper they had grown fond of, such as comics and crossword puzzles.
Perhaps the new Kindle app program could help with the crossword thing.
It wasn't just the Kindle features that turned people off, but also the cost: the study found that "Nearly all respondents balked at the Kindle DX’s $489 price tag."
The UGA researchers said Kindles are unlikely to win newspaper readers "unless they include features such color, photographs and touch screens."
