LAS VEGAS -- If ever there was any question that the worlds of televisions and personal computers are colliding, check out the specs and features on the Toshiba ZX900 Series Cell TV, with accompanying set-top box, shown this morning at the Consumer Electronics Show.
The system will come with eight processors in all, each 3.2 GHz. The company says it will be 10 times faster than the average PC. For storage, it will have a 1 terabyte hard drive. For connectivity, an ethernet port, 802.11nWi-Fi, and Wireless HD. When used with glasses, it offers in-home 3D viewing, and the company says it will convert two-dimensional signals. It also supports video conferencing and Internet video.
Toshiba, which is known in the PC business for its notebooks, says it's positioning the Cell TV as a media server for the home. The new TVs will be available later in the year, the company said. The big question in the short run is price: There company is mum on that topic for now, but you can bet it won't be cheap.
But especially in the long run, the whole convergence of TVs and PCs is looking as interesting as ever. The big question seems to be which side is better positioned to capitalize on the trend and come out on top -- the traditional PC players (including Microsoft) and their expansion into home entertainment, or the consumer electronics giants and their souped-up televisions.
