Nintendo's Wii game console sold a record 3.81 million units in the U.S. in December, eclipsing Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's Playstation 3 during the critical holiday shopping season, according to numbers released this afternoon by the NPD market research firm.
The PlayStation 3 sold 1.36 million units for the month, compared with 1.31 million units for Microsoft's Xbox 360. It's the first time monthly sales of the PlayStation 3 have topped 1 million units, NPD reported.
However, Sony didn't fare as well in the ranking of best-selling video games in the U.S. for December, registering just one title in the top 10, the PS3 version of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2." Nintendo held the top three slots, with "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" in the lead at 2.82 million units sold. Xbox 360 had three titles in the top 10, led by its version of the Call of Duty title, which outpaced sales of the PS3 version.
Here's the full top 10 as released by NPD.
It was a down year for video game consoles and handhelds overall in the U.S., with sales of hardware, software and accessories coming in at $19.66 billion, a decrease of 8 percent from 2008.
