Hard Rock's high-tech overload |

I love technology as much as the next geek, but after attending a preview at Seattle's new Hard Rock Cafe yesterday, I couldn't help but wonder if they weren't going a bit overboard.
Don't get me wrong, it's cool stuff, and the people at Microsoft no doubt love the entire setup as a demonstration of their products.
There's a big interactive touch screen running Windows 7 at the entrance; a Microsoft Surface table near the first-floor dining area; screens at the booths with a virtual jukebox and interactive exhibits; and audio tours that let people dial a number on their mobile phones and punch in an exhibit number to hear background about all the memorabilia on the walls. (They're looking into replacing the numbers with Microsoft Tag bar codes.)
Technologies on the back end include Microsoft SharePoint.
But by the time Hard Rock International CIO Joe Tenczar got to the little gadget that sits on the table and buzzes your server's watch, it started to feel like too much for a bar/restaurant experience, even for a big nerd like me. I mean, gimme a comfortable seat and a strong drink and I'm pretty much set, no gizmos required.
Then again, maybe I've been hanging out at too many dive bars. Am I off base? Seeing this stuff in a series of demos isn't the same as experiencing the place as a customer, so if you happen to go, let us know what you think. The restaurant, at 116 Pike St., opens today.
