Microsoft is unleashing a barrage of research and product updates today in a new push to get its business customers to deploy Windows 7, and to finally let go of the older Windows XP and Vista operating systems.
The research includes a Forrester Consulting study, commissioned by Microsoft, that analyzes twelve Microsoft enterprise customers that have deployed Windows 7 in their operations. The study (PDF, 34 pages) estimates that the companies saw a return on investment around 129 percent, as the operational savings from deploying Windows 7 (in areas including help-desk calls, reboot time, reliability and IT labor expenses) overshadowed the costs of rolling it out.
Microsoft is attempting to show businesses that Windows 7 can "turbo-boost" their bottom line, said Gavriella Schuster, a Windows general manager. Among other things, she said, companies are finding that they don't necessarily need to wait to upgrade their hardware before moving to Windows 7.
It's part of a broader effort by Microsoft to convince businesses to upgrade despite the lingering effects of the economic recession. Although Windows 7 sales have been strong, much of that strength has come from consumers. Business spending has been much slower to pick up despite signs of economic recovery.
As part of the same effort, the company says it is simultaneously refreshing its desktop virtualization technologies for businesses, with improved features including better support for the upcoming Microsoft Office 2010 on virtualized desktops.
