NSF, Microsoft offer researchers free access to Windows Azure
One of Microsoft's strategies in recent years has been to offer free access to its software and other technologies for selected audiences, such as early stage startups, aiming to encourage longer-term adoption of its products. That approach continued today as the company and the National Science Foundation announced a program to give selected scientific researchers free access to Microsoft's new Windows Azure cloud computing platform.
"Microsoft will provide cloud computing research projects identified by NSF with access to Windows Azure for a three-year period, along with a support team to help researchers quickly integrate cloud technology into their research," according to a joint news release. "Microsoft researchers and developers will work with grant recipients to equip them with a set of common tools, applications and data collections that can be shared with the broad academic community, and also provide its expertise in research, science and cloud computing."
The NSF notes that it has made similar arrangements with Google, IBM and others in the past.
