The impressive victory by the New Orleans Saints at last Sunday's Super Bowl was greeted with elation by many football fans across the country. And in Seattle -- despite the fact that the Seahawks didn't even come close to making the playoffs -- the game was being closely monitored by two local technology companies.
That's because Web site design firm Cypress Consulting and Web hosting provider AdHost operate and manage the New Orleans Saints' Web site, a property that saw traffic surge after the Saints knocked off the Colts. Consider this: During the regular season, the Saints Web site typically received on average about 59,000 visitors a day. On Super Bowl Sunday, that number increased to about four million.
With numbers like those, a technical fumble by AdHost or Cypress would have sent fans scurrying.
But the companies today said they handled the influx of fans looking at photo galleries, video highlights and other information with no problem at all.
"It was exciting to watch the correlation of their dramatic success on the field to their greatly increased network activity," said AdHost CEO Will Riffle in a statement. "After the Saints won the Super Bowl, their website traffic reached an all-time high. Although unsurprised, we were pleased that our infrastructure handled their extra traffic without an issue."
In order to deal with the inbound traffic, the companies said that they optimized the site infrastructure and application configuration before the game. That included "hardware load balancing, website application changes and increasing the multiple front and back-end servers connected to robust high-speed bandwidth connections."
AdHost and Cypress have some experience with designing and maintaining Web properties for Super Bowl bound teams, since they also built the Seattle Seahawks' Web site. But, do we really want to revisit that miserable defeat?
