You can't keep an entrepreneur down for long. Dan Shapiro plans to leave the chief technology officer position at Photobucket, a move that comes less than two months after Ontela and Photobucket merged.
Shapiro will remain a large shareholder in the newly-merged company and will continue to serve on its board. But the Ontela co-founder and former CEO tells TechFlash that it was time to move on. "It has been an incredible four year run," he said.
Shapiro is already kicking around a new business venture, one he just started contemplating in the past week. The former RealNetworks employee declined to identify the idea, though he did say he it was in the consumer space.
The 34-year-old plans to attend the FounderDating event in Seattle on Feb. 9 to see what other entrepreneurs think of the idea. Interestingly, that event is being put together by Ontela co-founder Brian Schultz.
Asked whether he'd consider simply partnering again with Schultz, Shapiro said that it wasn't outside the realm of possibilities. But he also noted that it is good to bring in "new blood."
Ontela raised $15 million from The Walt Disney Co.'s Steamboat Ventures, Oak Investment Partners, Voyager Capital, and it still employs 20 people in Seattle. The company developed a technology to easily move photos from camera phones to personal computers and photo sharing services.
Photobucket is currently led by acting CEO Tom Munro, who previously served as CFO at Ontela. The company is based in Denver.
Shapiro said he will switch to an advisory role at Photobucket over the next month.
