Seattle startup Swype is bringing its unique text-input technology to the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, allowing users of the Android-powered mobile device to insert text with a "swype" of the finger rather than the traditional tap. T-Mobile also said it plans to have the Swype technology working on other devices in the coming months, including the HTC HD2 Windows Mobile phone.
Executives at Swype claim that the technology allows users to add words to a mobile screen at rate as much as 30 percent faster than tapping. That could have huge implications for frequent senders of text messages or mobile e-mail.
That was not lost on T-Mobile, which is looking at new ways to boost sales and add features that resonate with customers.
"Consumers have been vocal in their demand for a more intuitive and efficient way to use a virtual keyboard on touch screen devices," said George Harrison, vice president of marketing product innovation at T-Mobile USA. "As T-Mobile continues to drive innovation for the benefit of our customers, the addition of Swype to T-Mobile products places our customers at the forefront of this new solution."
As we reported last November, Swype also has a multi-million dollar deal to embed the technology on some Samsung phones. Those include the Samsung Omni II, which was introduced last December.
Swype -- founded by the Cliff Kushler, the inventor of the T9 text input technology -- raised a $5.6 million second round of funding last December.
