Gaetano Borriello, a professor in the University of Washington's Computer Science and Engineering department, has been awarded $1.35 million from Google as part of the technology company's expansion of its funding for university research projects. Borriello was given the grant to further his research into using mobile phones for collecting public-health and environmental data.
Google announced the new "Focused Research Awards" this morning. The New York Times reports that the company is committing a total of $5.7 million to a dozen research projects, aiming to expand its funding of university research. In announcing the grants, Google said it's aiming to encourage "research in areas of study that are of key interest to Google as well as the research community."
Deborah Estrin of UCLA was also awarded a grant as a collaborator on the mobile phone data-collection project. Other awards were given in the areas of energy efficiency, machine learning and privacy.
It's not uncommon for large technology companies to fund university research. Elsewhere in the Seattle region, Microsoft's activities are coordinated through its External Research unit, part of Microsoft Research.
Separately, the UW said today that Google has committed $1 million for work on computer vision and graphics research in the UW CSE Graphics and Imaging Laboratory. Involved in that work are professors Steve Seitz, Brian Curless, and Zoran Popovic.
