Seattle online travel upstart Yapta has sealed a deal with Kayak by which the online travel search company will provide flight results on Yapta's Web site. Meanwhile, as part of the agreement Yapta plans to add its airfare tracking service to the Web sites of Kayak and SideStep.com in the coming weeks.
“Kayak and Yapta are similar in that both sites help travelers compare options, and when you find something that fits your budget and tastes, you book it where you want,” said Steve Hafner, CEO and co-founder of Kayak, in a statement. “In the coming weeks, we’ll be looking to pair Yapta’s airfare tracking service with the search results on some of our web properties. We’re optimistic about airfare price tracking and the impact it can have for both travelers and our business.”
Yapta -- led by former Alaska Airlines executive Tom Romary and backed by Voyager Capital, First Round Capital and others -- has tracked pricing on more than three million flights and helped travelers identity more than $300 million in savings. The service works by alerting consumers to price drops on selected travel dates, which the company says can boost "look-to-buy" ratios by as much as 25 percent.
Yapta also provides a service which notifies customers of possible airline refunds if ticket prices drop after purchase.
The company says that the average annual savings for Yapta members is $334.
More on the deal from the online travel site Tnooz, which notes that Yapta will get access to more airlines as well as multicarrier flights. Romary tells Tnooz that they didn't want to invest any more money in search technologies, instead partnering with one of the industry leaders in Kayak.
