My bad night at the WTIA awards |

You've heard of the Sports Illustrated curse. Well, if things keep going at this pace, we may have our own version of it in the works here in Seattle tech land.
It was a tough night for me at the WTIA Industry Achievement Awards -- a really tough night. I went a miserable two for seven with my picks, and missed every single one of the major categories. Not only did I miss them, I wasn't even close as several dark horses emerged to take home the top prizes. Even my dog Henry, who I employed to help pick one of the categories, missed the mark.
I apologized to Concur CEO Steve Singh and Picnik CEO Jonathan Sposato for picking their companies at the past two WTIA events -- only to watch them lose both times. (I swear, it's not my fault. But I think Singh and Sposato are doing just fine).
In my defense, several of the attendees I spoke to after the awards said they were equally surprised. The biggest upset of the night had to be Cozi, which knocked off Cheezburger Network and Picnik to claim the top prize in the Consumer Product of the Year category.
I didn't see that one coming, nor did CEO Robbie Cape who seemed as shocked as Matt Damon and Ben Affleck at the Academy Awards a few years ago. Cape was left speechless on stage, a rare occurrence for the entrepreneur. (See video below). Interestingly, the TechFlash readers accurately picked the Cozi upset in our Thursday poll.
The other big surprise of the night was Talyst, which knocked off Concur and Apptio. CEO Carla Corkern gave the speech of the night, admitting that she nearly killed the AutoCool product before another executive championed the project. (See video below). I guess that trash talking in the TechFlash comments really paid off for Corkern.
In the breakthrough startup of the year category, Marc Barros engineered an impressive win with his helmet-mounted HD camera for extreme sports. He beat out Dreambox Learning and Gist, the latter of which I thought would win given all of the buzz in the market and the typical preference toward consumer-Internet companies.
Here's a look at all the winners. And, if you are keeping score and I kind of hope you're not at this point, the two picks I got right were Amazon Web Services and OneBusAway. Oh well, there's always next year. And, there is a bright side. I did slightly better than 2008 when I scored an embarrassing goose egg, missing every single category.
