Is Amazon.com gearing up to make a bigger push into digital games? The company acquired Reflexive, an online casual games developer and portal, in October 2008, and launched an online store for casual PC game downloads in February 2009. Now an analyst notes a slew of games-related job postings at Amazon and predicts that Amazon will seek "new opportunities as an aggregator of online games."
Here's an excerpt from the note from Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets, via Gamasutra: "As in other segments of digital media, we expect Amazon to pursue new opportunities as an aggregator of online games, similar to Steam (PC), BigPoint (browser) and others."
The games-related job postings on Amazon point to some kind of new initiative, without a lot of detail. A posting for a "Designer, Digital Software and Video Games" says Amazon is "developing an exciting new customer experience in video games."
Along with the casual games store, Amazon is encouraging application developers to make games for its Kindle electronic reader (future versions of which may include color and touchscreen capability). Perhaps Amazon wants to set up a broader games offering spanning PCs, Kindles and other devices.
