Google's recent announcement that will no longer censor search results in China and may be forced to leave the country, following an alleged cyberattack that originated there, is shining a spotlight on other large technology companies that do business in China, including ecommerce giant Amazon.com.
Amazon is one of 30 firms that have received letters from Sen. Dick Durbin, requesting information on their China business practices. And as Durbin prepares to hold hearings Tuesday on global internet freedom, the New York Times found some interesting omissions on Amazon's China website.
The Times writes of Amazon's China site — Joyo Amazon:
A query for Zhao Ziyang — the former Communist Party leader who was stripped of power for supporting the 1989 democracy demonstration in Tiananmen Square — returns no matches. The Dalai Lama? A list of books that portray him as a dangerous “splittist” or that refer to the Chinese government’s hand-picked spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, who goes by the same title. A search of the words “censorship” and “China” comes back with “censorship” crossed out and three Sino-themed suggestions, including a book called “When China Rules the World.”
Amazon declined to comment to the Times beyond that "it was obliged to abide by the laws of the countries it which it operated."
I'm trying to find out if Amazon responded to Durbin's letter or if anyone from the company is expected to testify at the Senate hearings.
Amazon purchased the Joyo.com ecommerce website for a reported $75 million in cash and stock in 2004.
