Bellingham is looking to rally its poets, songwriters and comedians in an effort to attract Google Broadband, the latest in a series of PR stunts orchestrated by cities across the U.S. which desperately want to attract the new high-speed Internet network from the search giant. Working under the name "Bring Google Fiber to Bellingham," the civic-oriented group has begun soliciting submissions from the city's artistic community.
"If a songwriter, or improv troupe, artist or web designer have something to say about what makes Bellingham great and how Google Fiber would make it even better we want to hear it," said Bellingham entrepreneur David Wiggs, who is helping to organize the effort. "And so far, a broad group is getting involved."
Wiggs noted that Bellingham's improv theater, The Upfront, is currently working on a submission. And he's hopeful that other creative types will get involved too.
"We wanted broad involvement and didn’t want to give the impression that this was something that only applied to techies," he said. "Obviously, if Google brings fiber here it would benefit everyone, even the dozens of people who line up at the library for Internet access every day."
In order to encourage submissions, the Bellingham group plans to give away $500 to the top submissions in each of the five categories. (Business, college, K-12, individuals and non-profits).
Bellingham isn't alone in its desire to land Google broadband. In a highly publicized move earlier this month, the Mayor of Topeka, Kansas proposed temporarily changing the city's name to Google in order to win the high-speed Internet network. Meanwhile, paidContent.org's Joe Tartakoff reports on some of the other crazy antics, including the mayor of Duluth, Minnesota who jumped into a 35 degree Lake Superior this month and then reportedly declared that it was “exhilarating—just like bringing Google Fiber to Duluth.”
The City of Seattle also has said that it plans to make a bid for Google's new broadband service.
However, we've yet to see newly-elected Mayor Mike McGinn in his swimming trunks on the shore of Puget Sound.
