The Clear Spot wireless router will help iPad users gain faster Internet connections on the Clearwire 4G network
Clearwire today offered a series of announcements at the CTIA Wireless show in Las Vegas about its network, WiMax-powered devices and new markets. The Kirkland provider of high-speed wireless service continues its march across the U.S., announcing that it plans to begin offering service in Los Angeles, Miami, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City later this year.
In addition, the company said that Apple iPad users who have a Clear Spot wireless router ($140) will be able to connect to the Clearwire 4G network while on the go. That could provide a faster browsing experience for iPad users, while also creating a personal hotspot that can be used by as many as eight people. (Sprint, an investor in Clearwire, started touting a similar offering yesterday with an ad campaign targeted at iPhone users).
Clearwire also said that it now supports 30 WiMax-enabled computers with the release of the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 Netbook.
In a release, Clearwire CEO Bill Morrow also took an indirect swipe at those who are touting a competing technology known as long-term evolution. Morrow's point is that Clearwire is delivering service now, and its strong spectrum holdings position it well for the future.
He said:
"Across our 4G markets today, we're experiencing data usage levels that could shake the rest of the wireless industry to its core. On average, our mobile 4G customers are using more than 7 GB of data per month, and we're very pleased about the implications. Those who want to have a misguided debate about competing 4G radio technologies are missing the bigger picture. To deliver true mobile broadband requires deep spectrum resources and an all-IP network, and Clearwire remains unrivaled on both fronts."
The company said it plans to launch in Houston in the coming weeks, with the majority of the new markets coming on later in the year. Clearwire -- which currently operates in 27 markets in the U.S. -- hopes to have its network covering 120 million people by the end of this year.
Shares of Clearwire are up nearly two percent today, trading at $7.93.
