Forgive us for geeking out for a moment, but whenever Spock and Wesley Crusher are in town at the same time, we tend to notice.
We're looking forward to hanging out this weekend at Seattle's Emerald City ComiCon, and not just because "Star Trek" veterans Leonard Nimoy and Wil Wheaton are among the pop-culture icons making appearances there. After looking over the program for Saturday and Sunday, these are our best bets for the weekend.
Wil Wheaton Awesome Hour: Wil is smart, funny, and just basically all-around awesome, as he demonstrated in September in Seattle at the "Pitch Your Game Idea" panel at PAX. Saturday at 12 p.m.
Spotlight on Leonard Nimoy: Who in their right mind would pass up a chance to ask Spock a question? Plus, not to sound morbid, but the guy is like 200 years old -- how many more chances are you going to get? Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Halo Universe: This promises to be one of the most well-attended sessions at the show. 343 Industries, the Microsoft Games Studios unit that oversees the "Halo" franchise, will be on hand with special guests to talk about the future of the blockbuster video-game series and related properties. Saturday at 2 p.m.
Writing for Video Games: Writers behind games including "Iron Man 2," "Gears of War 2," and "inFamous" discuss the challenges and tricks of their craft. Saturday at 3 p.m.
Monsters & Dames Charity Art Auction: Bid on some cool stuff and benefit the Seattle Children's Hospital. What more could you want? Saturday at 5 p.m.
Breaking into Comics the Marvel Way: Who doesn't want to work on comics, and who wouldn't want to work for Marvel? Marvel talent liaison CB Cebulski will be joined by Marvel writers to talk about what it takes to work at the publishing house known for such characters as Spider-Man, the Hulk and Iron Man. Sunday at 1 p.m.
How to make webcomics: Then again, in this world of online self-publishing, maybe you can break into the business on your own. This session features four experienced cartoonists discussing the business of webcomics and answering questions from the audience. Sunday at 2 p.m.
Of course, this is just a sampling based on our interests. Be sure to check out the schedule for more. Emerald City ComiCon takes place Saturday and Sunday at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle. Two-day pass, $35; Saturday $25; Sunday $20. Ticket information here.
Ken Smith is a Seattle-based writer, musician and game-industry veteran whose work has appeared on sites including MSNBC.com and SeattlePI.com. Todd Bishop is managing editor of TechFlash.
