GoAhead Software today announced that it is shifting to an open source business model. As part of the move, the company also said that it is acquiring open source software provider Avantellis from Emerson Network Power. The deal marks the second acquisition for Bellevue-based GoAhead this year, following its purchase of embeddedMind in January.
“The adoption of open source by industry leaders combined with the rapid maturing of OpenSAF technology makes the timing of this decision ideal for our company,” said Asif Naseem, President and COO of GoAhead Software, in a statement. “We look forward to contributing our breadth of experience in high availability software to this vibrant community."
With the transition to open source, GoAhead said that its reliability software -- used by telecom, media and defense companies to ensure that applications continue running -- will play a wider role in the industry.
Mobile Web traffic is on the rise in part because of the rapid adoption of smartphones, including the iPhone. And because of that, mobile network operators like AT&T are experiencing network problems.
GoAhead's software focuses on those issues, helping companies reduce the amount of time it takes to get new networking equipment into the market. GoAhead will be shifting its SAFfire product to the open source model.
It will also join the OpenSAF foundation, with Naseem joining the organization as a board member. The company plans to roll out new products based on the open source framework, including diagnostic tools used to identify issues in production.
GoAhead's backers have included Cedar Grove Investments; Intel Capital; Motorola ; and Voyager Capital.
