Google has acquired Picnik, the Seattle online photo editing service. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but in a blog post today from Picnik the company says that the deal will allow it to "think big."
"Google processes petabytes of data every day, and with their worldwide infrastructure and world-class team, it is truly the best home we could have found. Under the Google roof we’ll reach more people than ever before, impacting more lives and making more photos more awesome," the company writes.
The announcement comes just a few days after another major milestone at Picnik, with the company announcing that it had surpassed more than one billion images edited on the site.
And we've pointed out before that Google could be a likely suitor for Picnik, writing last September that it could become a nifty replacement for Google's own photo editing service Picassa. Also, Picnik Chief Executive Jonathan Sposato has some interesting connections to the search giant.
Sposato
He sold his previous company to Google in 2005: Phatbits.
Picnik has rapidly grown into a large player in the online photo editing arena, competing against the likes of Adobe's PhotoShop Express. And it has done so without venture capital, bootstrapped by Sposato and co-founders Mike Harrington and Darrin Massena.
Just last summer in a Q&A with TechFlash, Sposato addressed some of the suitors that had been knocking on the company's doors. Asked about how many buyout offers the company had received, Sposato said "several."
"We are always very flattered by those types of conversations, but having gone through the M&A process before sometimes I think it is amazing that it happens at all sometimes because there are so many factors that have to go into it," he said.
At the time, Sposato also said the company didn't have a "for sale sign up on our front lawn."
"While that is true, I would be a fool not to return someone's phone call should they want to talk about that," he said.
Looks like Sposato may have found a good match with Google.
More to come.
