Next time you visit Long Beach, make sure to take your smartphone. The Washington beach town -- known for its kite museum, beach drive and Jake the Alligator Man -- has introduced new signage that incorporate QR codes at more than two dozen points of interest.
QR codes are essentially next-generation bar codes, which interact with smartphones in order to display information about what you are looking at. Now, you can finally get the story behind the world's largest frying pan.
"Because the codes are read by cell phones, they allow the reader to have an easily portable method of learning the background or more interesting facts as they walk through an attraction," according to a Web site promoting the new offering. "Instead of having to read a guide book or open a laptop to look things up, visitors can immediate satisfy their desire to know more."
The City of Long Beach said the QR codes have been installed at 29 locations throughout the city, including several points along the 8.5 mile Discovery Trail. Eventually, the city hopes to incorporate video clips, audio recordings, and slide shows.
