Microsoft: Don't worry, you won't need all that space to play Natal |

I found myself at the center of a video-game dustup this week when several blogs raised concerns about Microsoft's upcoming Project Natal motion-sensitive Xbox 360 controller, based on a post I wrote earlier this month about the amount of space the Natal sensors will be able to cover in a living room.
Bottom line, I made a mistake by writing that people would need to clear a space about 13 feet back from the Natal sensor array. That was, in fact, the maximum "play space" cited by Xbox officials during a media briefing I attended in Redmond, based on the configuration of the Natal sensors. But my post left the mistaken impression that it would be the minimum amount of space required to use the device.
Correcting the record, Microsoft says Natal will also work in smaller spaces.
"The comments recently about the play space for 'Project Natal' were misinterpreted," the company said in a statement. "It is true that the 'Project Natal' sensor reads the configuration of your room and adjusts play space, as appropriate. We know that living rooms come in all shapes and sizes, and have conducted numerous play tests to ensure everyone will be able to jump off the couch and into the fun when 'Project Natal' launches globally this holiday."
So cancel those plans to rearrange the furniture or move into a larger home, and please accept my apologies for the mistake. I'm updating the original post to correct the record, with a link to this post containing Microsoft's statement.
