Microsoft says it has struck another patent licensing deal, this one with Japan-based computer peripheral maker I-O Data Device Inc. The Redmond company says the pact covers I-O Data's use of Linux in its storage devices and routers, noting that it's "being compensated by I-O Data" as part of the deal.
It's the second time in as many weeks that Microsoft has made such an announcement. Microsoft said last week that a patent cross-licensing deal with Amazon included coverage for the online retailer's use of open-source and proprietary technologies in its Kindle e-reader, and its use of Linux-based computer servers.
Microsoft has long asserted that Linux and open-source technologies violate its patents. Open-source software advocates dispute those claims. Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, last week brushed off the Amazon.com announcement, characterizing it as an attempt by Microsoft to use marketing to support its position and stir up unjustified concerns in the industry.
“We’re pleased to reach this agreement with I-O Data,” said David Kaefer, Microsoft general manager of intellectual property, in a statement announcing the latest deal. “Microsoft has a strong track record of collaboration with companies running Linux-based offerings, and this agreement is a reflection of our commitment to partner with industry leaders around the world.”
Microsoft declined to disclose specific financial terms of the I-O data deal.
