Microsoft 'Skinput': How it works
A Microsoft Research project called "Skinput," developed in conjunction with a Carnegie Mellon grad student, got some high-profile attention this weekend as the answer to a question on NPR's popular "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" quiz show. I caught a glimpse of this project last week at Microsoft's TechFest, but the demo was still being calibrated when we stopped by, so I didn't post about it at the time.
That said, if you heard about it on the radio show and wondered what the heck it was all about, the gist is that the system can sense and distinguish among the waves that run through your arm or hand depending on where, precisely, you touch or tap. Keep reading for a video that provides a good explanation and background.
Of course, this gave the people at "Wait, Wait," plenty to talk about. "At long last," joked host Peter Sagal, "the Internet will be used primarily by people who are touching themselves."
