Playdom, a fast-growing distributor of games on MySpace, Facebook and other social networks, has purchased Bellevue-based Offbeat Creations in a deal of undisclosed size. Offbeat is the maker of games for Facebook such as Super Farkle, Be a Tycoon and Chug It.
"With this acquisition we are bringing a talented new game studio into the Playdom family with a very exciting game pipeline,” said Playdom CEO John Pleasants in a statement. “We have aggressive plans to expand our social gaming footprint in 2010 and the addition of Offbeat Creations will significantly enhance our development throughput and expand Playdom’s game pipeline this year.”
Offbeat's founders -- Chia Chin Lee, Robert Reichner and Tom Fakes -- will join Playdom as will their existing team of 12 game designers and developers. Those staffers will join Playdom's 15-person Seattle gaming studio. Lee, Reichner and Fakes previously worked at Sony and Zipper Interactive.
Playdom is one of the leading social media gaming distributors, with more 90 million of its games downloaded on Facebook, MySpace, Hi5 and other platforms. It raised $43 million in venture financing last fall, with TechCrunch estimating that it had a pre-money valuation at the time of $260 million.
Playdom competes against Zynga and Playfish, the latter of which was purchased by Electronic Arts for as much as $400 million last November.
