Mobile Crunch reports this morning that Mel Sampat, a program manager on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Series development team, is leaving the company to start his own firm -- focusing at least in part on helping companies bring their iPhone apps to Microsoft's mobile platform.
The mobile news site identifies Sampat's company as Mist Labs and points to this placeholder page, which shows an iPhone and a Google Android phone in addition to a Windows Phone 7 device. Our search of Washington state corporations and Securities and Exchange Commission filings didn't turn up any further details on the company, but we've got messages out to Sampat and Microsoft for more info.
"After seeing the great reception 7 has received, the dormant entrepreneur in me has resurrected with a huge urge to write apps again," Sampat wrote to his colleagues, as cited by Mobile Crunch. "I see an opportunity in a few original ideas I have, as well as helping big brands port their iPhone investments over to WM7. So I’m starting a new company and hope to have some cool WM7 stuff 'ready in time for holiday 2010.' "
The news comes as Microsoft unveils new details of the Windows Phone 7 Series application platform during its Mix conference in Las Vegas today. Mobile Crunch says several other Windows Phone 7 team members have left for similar reasons. We'll update this post if we're able to confirm or elaborate on any of this.
