Rhapsody, the digital music service from Seattle-based RealNetworks and MTV Networks, plans to update its iPhone app to allow for download and offline playback of tracks, no longer requiring users to be connected to a wireless mobile or WiFi network to listen to songs from the service, as long as their membership is current.
The feature was announced today from the South by Southwest technology and music festival in Austin, Texas. A preview was posted to YouTube and Facebook, and Rhapsody says it's getting ready to submit the update to Apple for approval and distribution through the App Store. Rhapsody says the feature has been the No. 1 request from users since the iPhone app debuted in September.
Adding the offline playback feature gives the app one of the benefits of traditional music download services, such as the iPhone's native iTunes and iPod features, which don't require users to be connected for playback after purchase and download. Using the Rhapsody service on the iPhone requires a $14.99 monthly Rhapsody to Go subscription, with no need to purchase individual albums or tracks.
Separately, Rhapsody said its app for Google Android devices will move out of private beta in the coming days, making it available for download in the Android marketplace.
RealNetworks announced plans last month to spin off the Rhapsody joint venture into an independent company based in downtown Seattle.
