Seattle might be known for coffee, airplanes and software. But it is also getting a reputation for a hotbed of cybercrime. According to a report out today from online security giant Symantec, Seattle has "the dubious distinction" of America’s "riskiest cybercrime city." The report found that Seattle was at the top in nearly every category, including cyberattacks and potential infections.
Others in the top five included Boston, D.C., San Francisco and Raleigh. And here's one place where Detroit can actually show some hometown pride. The Motor City ranked last in the survey, determined in part by malware infections and online activities such as accessing Wi-Fi hotspots and online shopping sites.
“Despite people’s familiarity with technology and the Internet, this study shows that everyone is exposed to a certain level of risk when they are online,” said survey coordinator Bert Sperling, founder and researcher of Sperling’s Best Places. “No matter where you live - be it Seattle or Detroit - it’s important to be vigilant in everyday online behavior in order to protect yourself against cybercrime of all types.”
