PlayStation's Project Natal spoof: Hilarious, and a little misleading |

With months to go before their expected release, there's no telling at this point which new motion-sensing video-game control system will be best, or which will prevail in the market. But Sony is taking the gloves off with a new video promoting its upcoming PlayStation Move system and, without mentioning them by name, spoofing Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's planned Project Natal control system for Xbox 360.
It's extremely funny, and it's getting a lot of attention today on video-game and tech blogs, but in the process of implicity poking fun at Project Natal, it overlooks an important aspect of the Microsoft system.
"PlayStation Move is not only crazy precise, it's also got what we in the future call 'buttons' which turn out to be pretty important to those handful of millions of people who enjoy playing shooters, platformers and, well, anything that doesn't involve catching a big red ball," says Sony's pitchman. "Come on, who wants to pretend their hand is a gun? What is this? Third grade? Pew, pew, pew, pew."
Although the motion-sensing Project Natal control system won't require people to use controllers, game developers will be able to simultaneously incorporate the Xbox 360's wireless controller and other hardware accessories into the experience when it makes sense. Microsoft's Craig Mundie and other executives made that point clear during a briefing with a small group of reporters in Redmond earlier this month. In those cases gamers would be able to control the action not only by moving their bodies but also by pressing buttons and triggers.
At any rate, who knows, Sony's approach could turn out to be better in the end, but it's worth knowing in the meantime that people won't necessarily be reliving their third-grade shootouts when they're playing Project Natal-based games.
Microsoft's challenge now: Coming up with something as funny as Sony's video.
