At the TechFlash Live event last night in Seattle, former aQuantive CEO Brian McAndrews singled out San Francisco-based Placecast as a startup company that was doing some interesting things in mobile advertising. Well, it appears that the company's existing investors -- which include Seattle's Voyager Capital -- think so too. Voyager, along with ONSET Ventures and Quatrex Capital, today are announcing that they are pumping an additional $3 million into Placecast in order to support the company's ShopAlerts mobile advertising service.
That follows a $5 million round announced last fall.
We've been writing a lot about location-based services in recent weeks, and the concept of mobile advertising appears to be gaining serious momentum in 2010. The rise of Foursquare and other location services are changing the way people think about marketing to people on the go.
Placecast's service allows retailers and restaurants like The North Face and SONIC Drive-in to offer marketing messages to customers as they enter so-called "geo-fences." Consumers opt-in to the service to receive marketing messages as they pass by their favorite stores or restaurants.
We'll have more on what was discussed around that topic and others at the TechFlash Live event later today.
And here's a look at how Placecast works.
